When I am stuck I often just randomly click on Google to see what appears - that soon offers opportunities to follow other paths.
This Visual Thesaurus is a brilliant idea, and a gizmo I use extensively when I am grasping for words, the pictorial nature of the definitions really helps when you struggling for that elusive thought just outside of your grasp. There is also a super programme that you can download free of charge which acts as an add-on for Word and means you can access the programme without leaving the document you are working on. The programme really helps bring words to life.
Another favourite programme of mine is Wordweb - I must use this programme three to four times a day over the last few years. It is a dictionary/thesaurus installed on the computer which is very easy to use, and you don't need to be linked to the internet. I have also found the owners VERY helpful (ie computer crashing meant I lost the codes - they responded with replacement without any quibble). I foud this very refreshing ! and felt I could use the programme with confidence.
